I think Treadwell had some identity issues. Some people have speculated he was gay (given his demeanor, I suspect) and that might be the case, I dunno. We rented "Grizzly Man" and a discussion in the very beginning about finding Treadwell and his partner's bodies caused me enough anxiety that I turned off the movie and didn't finish it. I'd like to, but it's too disturbing for me.

It is disturbing, but his death itself is never actually shown.
Of course, some people have accused Herzog of milking this somewhat in his "framing" story.

I have no doubts that Treadwell was bipolar and not on medication. I am bipolar myself and despite medication have had times of mania. Watching his videos gave me immediate identification with the 'highness' one feels when manic. His pressure of speech and unrealistic view of the world he inhabited with the animals is proof of that to me. His speech pattern and flights of fantasy take me back to feelings I would rather forget.
