I JUST commented about this very issue on another blog. I know a cat that did all fine and well with a litterbox. But now she has taken a liking to pooping "outside the box" so to speak, in the newly carpeted, yet to be furnished 2nd bedroom. Yeah. She goes there.

I have one litterbox and two cats. That thing is FILLED every day. I have to scoop every morning or else they poop BESIDE the box. Cats are very persnickety about clean shitboxes... 
Hate to say it hun, but you really ought to check for solids daily and scoop them if you find them. Liquids you can get away with for a bit longer, but not much.
This is why I have outdoor cats, they use the great big litterbox outside
I'm not a cat owner but I had a roommate who had two and she cleaned pretty much every other day and then washed it once a week. We have 2 dogs - I just send hubby out with the pooper scooper and a bag once a day...
One of my cats, who is just over a year old, does that same exact thing. He is fixed, also, so it isn't spraying. He is just extremely picky about the litter box being very clean. We have to clean it out every other day or he starts peeing on any article of clothing, blankets, etc. that he can find.
Oh I feel your pain! I used to HATE cleaning the cat box, and conveniently forgot to do it every day like the cats wanted.
Then the darling spouse bought me a litter locker, which is basically a diaper pail for cats. I still don't like doing it, but all I have to do now is scoop and toss into the container. I still HATE doing it, but there's a heck of a lot less fuss, and no more lugging bags which might break.
