Supermax is for convicts that are too great a security threat to be allowed in the general prison population. What threat, pray tell, is Madoff going to pose as a prisoner? Will he start a Ponzi scheme for cigarettes?
Besides which, I would have rather grave concerns about the admissibility prospects of any testimony obtained in the manner you suggest.
I was mistaken about Marion, as actually only the one in Florence is a supermax. I changed the item to reflect that.
KCP, I'm not so sure that the supermax is designed just for the security threats, but, if so, I think the feds could bend a few house rules to get this guy to talk. Jonathan Pollard is a naval analyst convicted of espionage for Israel; I can't see him as more of a security threat than Bernie.

It could be that some inmates are assigned to supermax prisons not because of their physical threat to others but because of what they know. Robert Hanssen the former FBI agent spying for the Russians is at a supermax. My sense is that he's there because of what is still in his head. Maybe Pollard falls into the same category.
You betray your ignorance by referring to the supermax as "FCI Florence." There are four federal prisons in Florence, and the FCI is the medium-security one. Or was that the joke?

Since Andrew Fastow of Enron fame is at the Florence supermax, I don't think the claim that only prisoners with a high security risk are housed in supermax's holds up.

The prospect of spending the rest of his life inside the Supermax may not be enough of a motivator to make Madoff talk. If I understand this correctly, the Supermax is reserved for the creme de la creme of the criminal elite who pose the maximum threat to society. While Madoff deserves to be included in the latter classification, he may actually want to be incarcerated at the Supermax among his peers (who will include among others the isolated Unabomber) rather than be thrown in among run of the mill felons who might actually pose a danger to his well-being.

Why not just water-board Madoff to get him to give up the goods on his pals? It costs way less than a supermax lockup, and is just as "uncomfortable".
Just was with depraved terrorists, water-boarding could be reserved only for those very special criminals who have important intel, but refuse to talk.
An oversight board would be needed, of course, to ensure only the badest of the bad get 'the treatment'. And there should be automatic appeals as with the death penalty. I nominate Dick Cheney to head the board (pun intended).
