You may want to re-verify if this was Yahoo or InvestorVillage, since the uncovered spyware was planted on IV.
Yahoo used to allow HTML in their posts, so I'm guessing it was changed for security reasons, so it is possible that it was Yahoo. An approximate time frame would be informative.
I had never used the Yahoo boards until after they did away with HTML markup, so I have no idea what went on there prior to December 2006.
Pretty much all of the pre-2007 Judd Bagley personas were wiped out by Yahoo, so it's impossible for me to examine the old posts for technical trickery. I did find a "TinyURL" trick, but they can be pulled anywhere.

it would not surprise me if insiders were dropping dimes on mr. bagley. insiders dropped dimes before with respect to vp resignations well in advance of overstock acknowledging them.
yahoo's well aware of the spyware trickery which transpired and won't tolerate it, either.
