Yes, I think he is very likely to dig the hole deeper every time he opens his mouth.
Since the question pertained to an ongoing legal battle, concealing use of private investigators in an earlier stage of the litigation is a flat-out, no-excuses lie.

You guys aren't even trying.
They didn't hire a PI. They were defrauded by a one Mr. Lair when they had tried to hire a PI. After that, they engaged a fiction writer, Judd Bagley, whose stream-of-consciousness act serves as a clutch to disconnect Byrne from reality.
