Gravatar I live within a mile or two of this proposed park, too. But I'm skeptical about about how grand it can be when it's going to be bisected by an increasingly busy Wurzbach Parkway. It also costs far more now than it would have to acquire this much land in the 80s. Apparently, the city was asleep at the switch while North Central SA was being developed.

Instead of pinning medals on Mayor H. for keeping his promises, I'd rather see this purchase held up as an example of why the city should be acquiring land for parks either before development occurs around it or with compulsory parkland set-asides from developers.

You want to develop a 100-acre parcel? Fine. You need to set aside 2 of those acres for a park and sell it to the city for $1 to get your development platted. Simple!

That's a livable long-term solution.

Development is fine, but we need our politicos not to lose sight of big-picture needs like greenspace.

Gravatar Swollen:

You're absolutely right about this and I've wondered that exact thing too driving through the plot of land.

The good thing about that article, however, is that it also gives a brief background of why the city was so asleep at the wheel until the late 90s. Development for development's sake.

It's times like these where I wish the E-N would go out and talk to Henry Cisneros, Frank Wing, Nelson Wolff and everyone else who sat on the sidelines in their cheerleading outfits while parcel after parcel of land got developed.
