I'm into older groups such as the Barleycorn and Pangur Ban they have some good stuff on youtube. I think the Newry band Justice was a cracker of a group.
I hate the likes of Eire Og they just seem to be loud and make a lot of noise. Theres more to a song than shouting up the ra in the middle of it!

Indeed there is. Young Ned of the Hills, now that's a song. I always liked Star of the County Down too (although that's not a rebel song).
I was at a wedding a few weeks back. Once all the formalities were done with we went to the residence bar, the guitars and whistle came out and the party started! Best part of the night is the session.

Up Down!
Star of the County Down is a lovely song, Chris. Gotta open that parochial mind of yours. There's a big beautiful world out there beyond the Orchard County!!

Since where I live is now the 'home' of the great modern rebel songs I suppose I am spoiled by the plethora of these great bands producing them right on my doorstep.
Many great lines on the oldies though, one of my fauvorites;
"Oh the strangers came and tried to teach us their ways, they scorned us just for being what we are, but they may as well go chasing after moon-beams or light a penny candle from a star"
One time going down the packed stairs at a night club humming away to the tune of 'James Connolly', a guy beside me started singing it and within seconds it seemed like the whole staircase and environs were singing it. Sure there were a few hushed angry words and dirty looks flying about There, but frig them. The first guy who sang it laughingly remarked to me outside;
"You fenians have got right inside my heid"
Seems that his best pal is always singing it and he thought fuck it! And gave it laldy. Such is the power of a good song.
I grew up with the Barleycorn tapes. On the morning my Ma and I were leaving for Australia, my Ma had my brothers remove all my Republican stuff from the luggage, lest we upset the Brits at customs in London. One of the things they didn't know about was my Barleycorn tapes. The principal of the high school I went to in Melbourne appreciated them also, he used to play them over the school tannoy some mornings, interspersed with Italian and Greek music. He loved them and had none of the hang-ups that we see over here.
I love so many songs to list, the sentimental songs rank high(we are who we are ) but the latest Glasgow Republican songs are up there also if only for parochial reasons.

LOL, Down ones are the enemy on so many different levels. 7 years of schooling amongst them has taught me that
"There's a big beautiful world out there beyond the Orchard County!!"

Chris:
I would be careful posting on this issue, Setanta needs no fucking encouragement. You missed a graet night in Newtown last night big man. The band were great and indeed a few of your favourites were played. I quite like the more recent hits Chris, Kinky Boots, the Big Bank Job etc. The Wakes are pretty good Chris as are Adelante and CeLTIC bEAT. i THINK THE DRUMS BRINGS A MUCH NEEDED DOSE OF VAVAVOOM TO REBEL SONGS.

I say "go for it, saw off your own hands". That way, we'd be spared the sanctimonious bullshit I've read on this site.

Broad Black Brimmer is a great drunken song to sing in a group.
God Save Ireland, of course too.

Chris;
You have won me over to Irish ways and Irish Laws. For those that do not know Chris does a great rendition. Your singing on Easter Monday brought a tear to my eye. Maith thu!

Go raibh maith agat, a chara.
It's a great song, the best version I have heard, which doesn't seem to be on Youtube is by Sinead O'Connor.

I'm not mad about that song, although I'm sure you belt out a nice version Chris!
How could I have forgotten about this one before? It's a gem.

Chris:
You appear to have over looked Kevin Barry! A pure classic. Also Ordinary Man, check the Wakes website for their version pretty neat by all standards.
Btw your oversight also omitted Setanta singing Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl, Auld Triangle etc.. I'm not saying hes good just pointing out that hes probably a bit pissed off you failed to mention him!lol

Newry Republican:
Check out www.padraigmor.net (The Big Horse) if you like Pangur Ban. Part of the website is dedicated to them and Pat also mentions Barley Corn as well. In fact you can purchase a digitally re-mastered dvd of an original recording of Pangur Ban playing in Glasgow in the late 1980's.
