We even had to endure nonsense about the disbanding of the Army Council of the IRA; Alex Maskey quite rightly rejected that nonsense.
He called it a distraction. Which is pretty ironic, considering that this is the executive body of an organisation that believed it had the right to act as judge, jury and executioner for 1800 people. Well, I suppose it says something about the mentality of both Sinn Fein and the IRA that the army council is still in place.

Looks to me that Sinn Fein was sold a 'pup' at St Andrews. The British will always renege on their words, can NEVER be trusted.( the Treaty, before the Treaty and since) They just can't resist meddling in other countries affairs and it will take very strong leadership to stand up to them. We hadn't got it in 1921, has Sinn Fein got the balls in 2008?
And lets not depend on Dublin - Bertie Ahern is a corrupt politician and a puppet of Brown's - useless!

Republicans will now be asking what Sinn Féin intends to do should the devolution of policing and justice fail to happen by May of this year.
rolling over yet again, would be the likely intention.

What is the point of the IRA Army Council, these days? If (and that's a big if, in my book) the IRA have put behind them armed action in favour of political activity, then they really have no need of an Army Council. The alternative is that they feel that they need to maintain an Army Council in case the political route doesn't work out as they hope, in which case the apparatus needs to be maintained for a return to armed action. Naturally, any SF politician - Maskey in this case - would not want attention drawn to this anomaly, and cries that examination of the issue are a distraction would be expected.
So what is it? Does PIRA need to maintain the Army Council because it's a hedge against political failure? Or is it, as I suspect, maintained because it's the only way Gerry and his bhoyos can buy off the republican hardliners? "Go on then, stop hitting the Brits and we'll pull every political lever we can to ensure that no-one investigates you making a personal fortune out of smuggling or bank robberies. If you go a bit too far (McCartney, Quinn, Northern Bank) we'll do everything we can to stop the spotlight being shone on you."
