I don't see any real role for PDs in Irish politics. FF, FG and to a large degree Labour have taken to the PDs low tax/low business regulation policies.

There isn't really anything that you get with the PDs that you can't get with FF/FG

They'll be finished in a few years.

Chris:
Great piece. The most exciting thing about the whole episode was that the race was decided by such a close margin. Shows how divided and factionalised the PD;'s actually are. They have already began their irreversible spiral into free fall and I can't say its undeserved. Mc Dowell was a joke, and if Harney had a shred of moral fibre or decency she would resign from her post. She has messed up the health system of the 26 co beyond repair. Their failed right wing politics are in the process of being consigned to the dust bin, and the sooner the better. Mind you I think it would be really interesting if Davy Shakes contested the next assembly elections on a PD ticket!lol

"She has messed up the health system of the 26 co beyond repair."

Adelante,

Can't say I'm a big fan of the PDs, but that statement isn't correct. The health system was a mess long before Harney took over the breach. In fact, it is a testament to how messed up it was that someone of her undoubted ability (she was a brilliant in DETE) couldn't fix it.

She has made it worse, Co-location, Cancer scares, recuitment freeze, Consultants problem etc

I have spoken to people who work in the area and they say that conditions have got worse since she took over.

Exactly right.

Neo-liberal "reforms" are certainly not what the health service in Ireland needs. The problem is not that complicated. For a start we need vastly more beds, which she has not delivered. The real damage was done under by the gangster Haughey and Rory O'Hanlon but Harney has failed to remedy it. Her visits to the US for "solutions" (funded by ourselves) are instructive. She wants to entrench healthcare apartheid, not eradicate it. Anyone who thinks patients (particularly children and the elderly) should be treated with dignity and respect, and get the care they need delivered without delay irrespective of their wealth, should oppose Harney.
