I don't think it's particularly mysterious ... people feel time-trapped into trying to squeeze more and more productivity into less time, so they often skip the 'double checking' and 'polishing' parts to whatever they're doing. On a related note, employers look to minimize costs, so hiring someone who gets it 'close enough' most of the time is often a helluva a lot cheaper than hiring someone skilled and careful who gets it right almost all of the time.
I think the impact of instant messaging and email contributes a lot too (duh). People write knowing their words are going to be pretty ephemeral, so they generally just care enough to make sure their gist is clear.
I'm not sure all of this is entirely a bad thing, but coming a bit from the 'old school' myself, it can be annoying. It forces the recipient of written information to do extra work.
dieselboi: you make a good point ... perhaps a little too well. ("occurances" ... *sigh*).

For some time we have been dumming education down because we have been more interested in feelings than facts. Sadly, this has gone on so long that our children's teachers can no long write correctly. So what do we expect?

Glad to see you back. I was wondering about you.
Being a perfectionist is really a curse. It causes a person to spend time and effort where it isn't needed. And worry about it the whole time.
Yes, it feels great when everything is perfect, but I've just described OCD (obsession=perfection, compulsion=striving to get it right). It took me years to figure out that this was what I was doing.

Even worse are people who feel the need to put random apostrophes everywhere. Why do they do that? gggrrr....

"Being a perfectionist is really a curse. It causes a person to spend time and effort where it isn't needed. And worry about it the whole time."
Now being a perfectionist is a curse and it's "not such a bad thing" that people care less about communicating properly. Um, talk about compensating for a nation of losers.
I'll tell you what I'm sick and tired of: people deciding that doing a shitty job is totally fine because "none of it matters anyway..." and developing a smugness about their lack of competence or care in the work they do.
And when did our world become the one that Ray Bradbury wrote about in Fahrenheit 451?
Caring about the quality of the task you are performing, no matter what it is, is the mark of a person who takes pride in their existence. I don't disagree that there is a point where perfectionism becomes OCD and counter-productive, but let's not assume that any degree of perfectionism falls into that category. There is a lot to be said for a person who wants everything that they produce to ultimately be something they can take pride in.
That is what competence is about to me. It says "my presence on this planet is not without significance and I want my fellow human beings to regard me with the respect that I deserve."
Let's not get the shit twisted and start saying things like "[Perfectionism] causes a person to spend time and effort where it isn't needed." A person might as well just kill themselves now and make room on the planet for those who contribute to society rather than just consuming like animals and not giving a shit that we are human beings blessed with what is meant to be intelligence. We are supposed to progress as a species, not decline into "we've decided none of this matters so let's all degenerate."

Hi there! I was lurking on the internet reading about BCTI today. I was visiting a friend in WA (where I used to live) and we started talking about the school we both used to work at. You guessed it! Heh- I knew that place inside and out, and had more than one run in with Tom and Morrie due to my personal ethics. I worked there for way too long and left on poor terms. They say Kharma is a bitch and I always knew that place would get theirs. Thank you for helping it happen.

being a profectionist isn't so bad, it's just a professional perfectionist i think. i got to your blog while trying to find the history of the phrase "red headed stepchild". i still don't know the history but i did find some interesting uses of the phrase anyway.
