Gravatar My dear,
The problem is of understanding. The Western countries do not try to understand the sensibilities of people in the East. One after another countries in middle-east are being destroyed and then the expectation is that people wouldn't be angry.
As Muslims we strongly oppose even depiction of a cartoon of Jesus in mocking way, but we can't help because he is a kind of 'more belongs to you'. Amercia-Britain installed these Saudi monarchs because they don't want democracies in middle-east so that Oil and Gas could remain in control, then you arm the mujahideen in Afghanistan to fight Russia and then later let them go astray.
Are people here no humans? But the fact is that feelings of the Eastern people don't matter or rather in your comforts you don't try to look at the world from our side. We aren't that bad. Surely.
Take care
Adnan

Gravatar Adnan:

Perhaps Muslims should "understand" that the rest of the world is not obligated to observe their religious rules.

Gravatar Giving in to thugs, religious or otherwise, will only serve to encourage more outrageous behavior.

Adnan, I realize that there are reasons why these people are rioting. They may have a good reason to be angry. But they do not have a good reason to destroy property and kill people.

Gravatar I think I have an idea why these people are rioting...and guess what, it's not just about the cartoons.

If you think about it, most of the actual rioters are probably not your average middle-class family comfortable with their life. They are more likely to be coming from the huge urban poor class that exist in nearly every 2nd and 3rd world city. That kind of life is not the kind that leaves you excited every morning and satisfied at every evening. Consequently, anger builds up, anger that is hard to vent.

When wealthy people are involved they will usually be the instigators or organizers. In that case, they are not driven by religious zeal, but by what many with money and power want, more of it.

With the right kind of inflammatory speech to make a small thing look huge, and by giving something to blame, you suddenly have masses of very angry people at your control, and you can control what they are angry at.

That is why western institutions in general are being targeted, because the organizers know that the west is always an easy thing to blame for one's troubles anywhere outside the west.

So while they might say they are angry at the cartoons, what's fueling them is their own anger or desire for more.

Gravatar Scriptor is no doubt correct in assuming the bulk of the "crowd" is made up of the uneducated urban poor, whipped up into a frenzy. But study after study shows that the "jihadists" are neither the poor nor motivated by poverty. They tend to be the educated, middle-class or better, younger people. And they are motivated by religious ideology, not social conditions. The aim is to create their version of a muslim paradise world-wide. Look at what the Taliban did in Afghanistan for a view of what that means.
