as a startup CEO and former anthropologist. I think this is a great approach. Understanding communications in all it levels and complexity is key. I always liked the robert zipf philosophy on language evolution and even technical evolution being about being lazy. Economics in the original sense of the word.
Looking forward to the next post.

Looks like the start to a great string of posts. Like the analogy to lossy compression algorithms. In the VoIP tribe, I suppose our algorithm samples at low bit rates to derive the acronym soup that we live by today.

Chomsky is awesome. It's nice that Republican's can criticize his politics but can't criticize his contributions to computational linguistics.
Note that these aren't a lossy compression algorithm since data isn't lost. It's just a regular compression algorithm. That is assuming that people are representing the same concept with the identical word. I guess words could be imprecise which would yield a data loss.
Onward!

Speaking of language really makes me think about branding. These new web startups can really use some better names that actually have intrinsic meaning.
With an abstract name not only does it require effort to get people to the site, but even more effort to associate the name with meaning and for users to explain the site to their friends.
Facebook.com, Youtube.com, Myspace, are great names and are extremely viral. del.icio.us is a horrible name.
I did a review of the website eefoof.com for paid videos, one of the worst names ever.

It is also interesting to look at how we learn in terms of how it begins to shape and form patterns in communications.
One of the biggest generational changes we have been witness to is the evolution from traditional forms of learning - reading, writing and arithmatic - to an experiential model - look, link, think, try again.....
