That video is great!
And on the topic of communication, I think that the ever expanding uses of the internet will increase communications. Just try this ap for your comments in your sidebar. It allows users to add audio comments. How's that for open communication.

The great thing about what you refer to as "connected aloneness" is that everyone is able to come to their own conclusions and are less affected by the rules of conformity.
In addition, I believe online communication is so popular because it is the lowest cost form of communication. Not just in a monetary sense, but more importantly in a sense that the communicator holds a lower cost of rejection risk.
Most of the physical communicators that normally come into play are removed leaving a more unbiased assessment and transference ideas.
What is said becomes more important than how it is said and who is saying it.
There are downsides to this in our transitional period. More time spent communicating online consequently mean less experience communicating face to face. People run a higher risk of becoming socially inept and isolated from personal forms of communication.

I used to follow that area that strays into Semiotics quite a bit, but I believe that Gert Hoffmann and Symbolic Interaction would be one of the key texts in the area you look like you are looking into. Also, check out Paul Muldoon's new book on "close reading" (The End of The Poem) for a look at how words can refuse to be tied down to any one meaning, and how a close reading of our own names can lead to an interesting meaning-journey....

Good observation. This is why on HOTorNOT, we tell people how long ago the person you just rated checked his or her score, and how many other people rated a picture.
