Guys, just pay the extra for cable. That's a bit extreme for trying to pick up a TV signal.

As far as I know the Cucuruchos wear their hoods so that the penitents not to be identified. The procession should serve the penance and not turn into a show running. The type of hoods are similar to the clothing, which the accused had to wear during the tribunals of Inquisition in Spain. Maybe some remind the Goya painting "The Tribunal", where the accused have little flames painted on the robes and hoods, what expressed the seriousness of their situation.

Jenn, where in Dayton did you use to go? I lived there for many years and go back every once in a while to visit my brother and have never had to endure liturgical dancers. I did go to a very strange and uber-liberal church near UD (not the old one near the ghetto) but no dancers that day.
With regards to the Spanish pointy robes, I'd have to research what the tradition is but they are very old, I remember seeing them in Spanish plays (operetas and zarzuelas) when I was younger.
As for the Flash Gordon fan club...

Guys I think I figured out the meaning behind the second photograph. The helmets look slightly Roman. and the sign on the robes look like the Chiro, (with the roudy bit removed), as to why the robes look like they're made out of some metallic substance I have no idea.
As for the small cross on their helmets, the only comparison I can recall is the golden crosses found on the helms of some crusader knights during the short lived days of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Thats about it.
Dunno the exact meaning though, maybe something similar to Spain? Only less Spainish?

The robes are of very old provenance. They antedate the Ku Klux Klan by centuries. If I am not mistaken, they are worn by members of make religious associations, or cofradias, during the Good Friday procession.

Correction to my earlier post - that should be male, not make, religious associations. And it is really unfortunate that something that was born of piety has been turned into a symbol of bigotry and hatred.

Here's a bit more information regarding the 2nd photo:
The relic of the Holy Blood (a blood-stained cloth retrieved from the crucifixion) was brought to Bruges in 1149. Ever since, it has been the subject of great veneration and, since 1303, of a magnificent religious procession. The tradition is maintained each year by about 1,500 local people in medieval and crusader costume in a spectacular, mile-long procession through the historic streets of the city. The event is divided into two parts, beginning with biblical and historic floats representing scenes from the Bible. The second part depicts the journey of the relic to Bruges, carried by the Count of Flanders, to its home in the Basilica of St Basil. This is one of the oldest and most beautiful historical and religious processions in continental Europe, attracting thousands of visitors and pilgrims.
