I just heard the taped Sunday Mass ending with the 300,000 in attendance delivering a stirring rendition of "Holy God We Praise They Name."

One wonders what would have been the effect over the centuries if the foot soldiers of history had had radio and television and had been able to regularly watch and listen to their "enemies" singing the same hymns as they would sing?

"Gottesdienst", as you say, literally "God's service". I don't know the nuance of a native German speaker, so I don't know if it means service rendered to God or service that God renders. My guess is that it is service rendered to God.

The Greek-rooted word, "Liturgy" means a work or service done for the people (kind of like "civic service"). The Greek of Hebrews 8:6 speaks of Christ rendering such service.
