Stuff like this is why i liked the Army--not the best job in the world but at least we were plain spoken!
If i were a secret snow person, I would give all my gifts with a sexist, romanist, olde schoole mid-american slant.
then I would embrace my new job as a dishwasher.

I hear you Gerald. At least she doesn't have to put up with periodic anti-Catholic and anti-religion rants like I've had to listen to (like the one here). I had to sit through another one yesterday about John XXIII and Pius XII. I find it amazing I haven't popped my cork and gotten myself fired yet... The Holy Spirit must be restraining me or something.

Do people in an office really need to give each other gifts at Christmas time? If they have that money to spend, I suggest they use it to buy a toy for a toy drive or use it to "adopt a family" We've actually done this in my office several times. Have a Blessed Christmas.

If anyone criticizes the Church for WWII, simply refer them to the first four PARAGRAPHS of Mit Brennender Sorge. I'm sure Gerald would have said the same thing.
But I'm glad I work in a Catholic office, where Merry Christmas is said, and we had a Christmas dinner (though at a great Italian restaurant, look up Ciao's if you are ever in South Bend).
I've been doing a lot of skimming through of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the GIRM, and other encyclicals for my work, checking my boss' book references, and I've come to the conclusion that every Catholic MUST READ Sacrosanctum Concilium. Its a shame how few people know what the Church actually teaches, its full of both antidotes to modernism, atheism as well as Protestantism. I also stumbled upon an encyclical by Pius XI on countering athiests, havent read it yet, but I will be soon.

I know how you feel! Just last night I told my husband (after reading CTA's comments on appealing the excommunication) that the initial urge I get is to punch these people (i.e. heretics/dissenters) and tell them they're wrong instead of praying for their conversions. I have a long way to go in the charity dept...
Thanks for bringing up the fact that Santa is much more Thor than St. Nick: http://www.catholicculture.org/l...view.cfm?

Who dictates what is 'politically correct'? When overwhelming majorities of people say they are not offended by Merry Christmas and the other trappings (secular) of Christmas, what then is the criteria used for politically correct? JUst a question.
Oh, and anonymous, you're a coward! A filthy, lowlife, gutless coward. Anyone who just comes in and makes potshots and hides behind 'anonymous' is spineless. I happen to enjoy the stories Gerald makes available through this blog; I have even used some as intros to homilies. I have also enjoyed the various opinions given here, even Hoodlum's. It would seem that Gerald is providing a service. Your critiques have made me realize this. To paypal I shall go!

Unspecified holiday person? OMG, that's funny. Unless it's the devil, they're talking about, which could very well be the case.
Luckily we don't engage in all that gift-giving and such nonsense where I work. I don't do that and no one can make me.
I just blithely go on wishing people a Merry Christmas and crossing myself at lunch. They don't like it, they don't have to look or listen. Most normal people won't say anything; those that do are megalomaniacs anyway.

I used to teach in a school district where they tried to tell us that saying "Merry Christmas" was forbidden. This was actually about 10 years ago--very trendy place, very "withit" boss, right. I ignored it because the boss was an idiot anyway. No harm ensued. What could they do?
Left of my own free will to go on to a better job. What a dump.

The marks of a real Catholc man are:
1. Doesn't rely on his wife to work so he can build a blog and a future photo joint, and then criticizes his wife's employers who make it possible for him to even eat.
2. Doesn't have to write "bleep" because hateful cursing doesn't cross his mind.
3. Provides his readers with more than negative criticism of the world and of certain people within the Church.
This blog is quickly becoming a cancer of the souls of its readers.

Mark of a Real Catholic man:
Looks for the plank in his own eye instead of criticizing someone for trying to be an entrepreneur.
Knows that some things ridiculous in the world need cursing.
Knows the difference between critics who love the Church and critics who are destroying it.
Has read Sancrosanctum Concilium, a bit of Canon Law, the General Instruction, etc etc...

It appears from my observation that, 'materialism' has absolutely gone to new heights--and is out of control this Christmas season. I've heard, read, and noticed that people now seem to feel absolutely OBLIGATED to give gifts to virtually EVERYONE who has crossed their path in the past 365 days!!
It's no wonder that the average person spends at least six months just paying off debt due to Christmas gifts!! Folks, this is sick!! Perhaps all of the excessive spending, 'secret Santas', office 'grab bags', etc., are just ways in which people psychologically try to compensate for their frustration towards not being able wish others a 'merry Christmas' in public any longer?

From http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/, run by Chrissie Maher OBE. (This is a delightful website, with a very serious purpose. I take the risk of offending your American readers, ‘People of “Color”’, by not altering the spelling used by the British and Irish, ‘People of “Colour”’.)
And with that, we leave you with a Christmas message which one of our supporters sent us, and which we found quite amusing.
‘Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasions or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all.
‘I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make the world a great place (not to imply that any country is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee.
‘By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.’
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Plain English Campaign.
And a Happy Christmas from this Irishman in the Philippines.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Re REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL HELP FOR ORPHANS AND WIDOWS
I am norah felista nabaweesi from Uganda ; we a group of women who are the guardians of the orphans and vulnerable. The orphans lost their parents ( our sons/daughters) due to HIV /AIDS.
The orphans were left helpless and dropped out of school due to the inability of getting school fees requirements. The guardians who look after the orphans are old and some are widows. The guardians can do weaving and get very little money that is used to meet the basic needs at home I call upon for financial help in order to help the marginalized orphans and guardians
Hope my request will be considered.
Yours
Norah felista nabaweesi
