I'm in dc, and I went to the sotomayor hearings today...al franken seemed quite bored, if his body language was any indication. He took like 10 minutes to polish his glasses, and then scratched his ear and reclined in his chair. Prediction: within two days, Al Franken will declare that he is not running for reelection, because, oddly enough, he actually freaking hates politics.

Amen. The debate needs to be reframed on this issue. Karl Rove defined it years ago and his terms still rule. The problem is it does not fit in a sound bite ala "latina women verses white man.

Franken is a Harvard graduate who was a policy wonk before he was even on SNL. His family discussed politics all his life. He is acutely interested in politics.
1)Do a little research before offering completely ignorant opinions.
2)Actually listen to what he said in his virgin speech--a well thought-out piece complete with nuanced criticism of his so-called colleagues across the aisle.
3)Sessions is a bigot incapable of authoring as fine a speech as Franken just did.

Al Franken was the guy who originally got me into politics, with his books, as dorky/amusing as that is in retrospect. I have read four of his books, and enjoyed them all immensely, and I agree: he certainly knows his stuff. I have nothing but respect for Al Franken, and I think he will certainly be a finer senator then maybe 70% of the current ones.
In response to your points:
1. I was physically in the room where sotomayor was being questioned, and al franken looked bored. I do not claim to offer any deeper statement about franken than that.
2. I liked his speech a good deal.
3. Jeff Sessions f***ing sucks. I really don't feel like we're disagreeing on anything here...I'm just tossing in an humorous aside that franken looked bored during the hearings. Heck, I might be bored also, if I wasn't asking any questions during what is essentially a forgone conclusion of a confirmation hearing (barring something major, I believe sotomayor will easily get confirmed, as she should be). In short, I apologize for any insult I may have offered, and I assure you it was entirely unintentional.

sb, nice to know it was tongue-in-cheek. I get so tired of having to fight off wingnuts and freepers who think they can insult educated, passionate politicians like Franken just because they're "liberuls," while giving their own morons like Sessions a pass.
