For a few years in the late '70s and early '80s, the student government of the University of Wisconsin erected this edifice in fulfillment of a campaign promise to bring the statue of liberty to Madison:

Gravatar Don't forget about the staring role that Lady Liberty had in the Ghostbusters Movie

Gravatar Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Gravatar Just remembered that Spaceballs parodies this, too. "Oh, shit, there goes the planet."

Gravatar In Deus Ex (eidos) the decapitated statue of liberty was part of the setting in the first mission.

Gravatar I've always been struck by how many illustrators seem to think the Statue is made of stone

Gravatar A WWI bonds poster:
http://atomiq.org/archives/2002/ ..._the_earth.html

Gravatar I believe there is one in Independence Day too

Gravatar You've been Boing Boinged, sir.

Gravatar In the '70's Saturday Morning cartoon "Thundarr the Barbarian" the Statue is shown in a decayed state at the start of each show, and there's an episode where the evil wizard Gemini imbues the statue with life (but better than in Ghostbusters 2) and an awesome flame-throwing torch! The basic concepts and story ideas for that show came from the fertile but sometimes repetitive mind of Jack "King" Kirby, who also created the Kamandi comic book for DC, as seen above...

Gravatar There's a great shot in THE FIFITH ELEMENT that shows the Statue of Liberty not destroyed, but incorporated into the sprawling megapolis of future NYC.

Gravatar Yes, although I didn't notice it while watching the film, there is one in Independence Day (it's very obvious in the CGI fetaure on the extended two-disc edition. Yes, I have the extended two-disc edition of Independence Day. It's not worth the bother, trust me.)

Gravatar awesome, awesome!

Gravatar The new Smashing Pumpkins album:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Ima...geist_cover.png

Gravatar You forgot about Cloverfield, the one most fresh in the collective eye.

Gravatar These are great! I've added everything you suggested I could find. Keep the ideas coming...

Gravatar Matt: Check again, Cloverfield's up there. That was actually the start of the whole mess...

Gravatar whoops, how'd i miss it, i think my brain is blocking it out now, due to it being everywere

Gravatar From the sublime to the ridiculous... Darth Liberty http://i.n.com.com/i/ne/p/2007/ S...rty_400x600.jpg

Gravatar i have a self-made image of the statue holding a dry codfish, 'symbol' of my country, portugal. i made it as part of a sticker-project-collection where famous people (and statues) change their utensils for the infamous fish.
tell me something if you wish to add the 'in cod we trust' image to your collection.
long live el bacalhau,

Gravatar There was a nice fight scene on the statue of liberty at the end of the first X-Men movie.

Gravatar At the end of the first X-Men movie there was a nice fight scene on top of the statue of liberty.

Gravatar Great collection! I'd never thought about this before.
Nice work!

Gravatar I think in a Futurama episode, the statue of liberty is damaged in an alien attack.

Gravatar Don't forget the first X-Men movie, in which the climactic scene takes place on the Statue of Liberty. Here are some pics:

http://img104.imageshack.us/ img1...liberty2rb4.jpg
http://img137.imageshack.us/ img1...liberty3rd6.jpg

Gravatar There's also a brief scene in 'Children of Men', showing a mushroom cloud over Manhattan:

http://img137.imageshack.us/img1...9/ nynukeez5.jpg

Gravatar What about the cover artwork for God Forbid's IV: Constitution of Treason Album?

http://thumbsnap.com/v/L5CStVEE.jpg

Gravatar you should try the album cover for "Contradictions Collapse" by the Swedish band Meshuggah.

Gravatar There may be another one from the earliest Buck Rogers strips (sorry I do not have an image). When the "Mongols" begin their attack on North America, they begin by destroying the Statue of Liberty because it was our "Idol".

Gravatar I've scanned what I think is the earliest one yet:

http://img116.imageshack.us/ img1...tmorningct2.jpg

It's a political cartoon I came across in the book "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future."

It's called "The Next Morning" and comes from the Feb. 24, 1887 edition of Life. It portrays the U.S. Navy suffering a defeat in some future attack as a result of outdated military technology.

Gravatar My favorite has to be the Planet of the Apes one, simply because it's so iconic.

And maybe I'm just completely overlooking it, but I can't see where it is in The Fifth Element screenshot.

Gravatar It's been a while since I've seen that move, but from what was said earlier in the thread I think it's that vertical-looking thing in the middle of the cityscape -- the point is that NYC has expanded into the harbor around it.

Gravatar You guys forgot ghost busters 2

Gravatar Yeah, that was the thing I was looking for. Ghostbusters 2, how could you have possible forgotten?

Gravatar A damaged Statue of Liberty is also the scene of the climactic fight between Judge Dredd and Rico in the Judge Dredd movie.

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ The_Statue_of_Liberty_in_popular_culture)
the torch is damaged in the Richard Donner cut of Superman II, and the statue is picked up and thrown in Superman IV.

Gravatar I haven't been able to find an image of the Statue from either Superman or Ghostbusters II yet. I may have to trek out to the library to get them...

Gravatar You can blow up the Statue of Liberty to reveal a woman in a bikini in Twisted Metal 2 for the original PlayStation. It's kinda sci-fi-ish.

Gravatar Found two more -

Ghostbusters II:

Batman Forever:

Gravatar what a nice collection

Gravatar see http://demo.worldinconflict.com/...ges/ demo_01.jpg

Gravatar i thought for sure i had the earliest until i saw ty's 1887 image, anyhow here's one from 1889 http:// www.childrensbooksonline....st_American.htm

Gravatar And what about the moving Statue of Liberty from Ghostbusters 2?

Gravatar There is a Statue of Liberty in Las Vegas in the movie trailer of Resident Evil 3. as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f...h? v=fOCElvS95HM

Gravatar In Command And Conquer - Red Alert the first mission as the USA is to defend the statue from attack by the Russians - as they advance it becomes more and more damaged.

http://www.cnccz.com/ra2/screens...hots/ statue.jpg

Gravatar In the judge dredd movie and comics the statue of liberty was covered in grafitti, badly damaged and overshadowed by the far larger statue of justice.
In the movie version the head also contained a secret cloning lab. I have the "making of book somewhere, I'll do some scans If I find it

Also, I remember an issue of the MASK comic( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.A.S.K. ) where the villian used his helicopter to steal the statues head and replaced it with an almost identical head, except the new head could open it's mouth to reveal a 4x4 car with machine guns

Gravatar For another appearence of the Sataue of Liberty check out the interior of the recent issue of "E-Man" the story of "Dolly".

Gravatar http://www.flickr.com/photos/673...N00/2193715166/

Gravatar Maybe not quite what you're looking for but KISS used the Statue of Liberty on their 'Revenge' tour in 1992.

During the show the facade fell away revealing a skeleton.

Here's a page with pics:

http://www.kissfanshop.de/KissTo...urs/ 1992USA.htm

Gravatar There is a Transformers comic with the Statue of Liberty being spray painted and destroyed. From the 1980's... I have it somewhere, but can't get to it now to scan.

Google does nothing.

Gravatar Man in Black II with the statue being forget-it-all beacon for NYC

Gravatar You forgot the last part of National Lampoon's European Vacation where Clark makes the plane fly into the Statue and break the arm off.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=nTUq8r-RGdM

Gravatar Deep Impact has the statue (and the rest of NYC) get wiped out by the big wave.

Gravatar Update No. 8 is a card from the "Dinosaurs Attack!" series of Topps trading cards.

Gravatar Twisted Metal 2 video clip of Statue of Liberty:

(Not the greatest quality but hey, what can you do?)

Gravatar Kind of a strange one - in the humorous music video for "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse (which I encountered through Guitar Hero III), there's a misplaced Statue of Liberty at 1:23 in.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j...h? v=jV1bRfLHA3A

Gravatar Also check out the scene in Across the Universe where the newly drafted soldiers carry a giant liberty across a muddy model of Vietnam. Great scene.

Gravatar Aww man!

My girlfriend and I were just talking about this.
I am getting pretty sick of NYC and the Statue of Liberty getting blown up or used as some post apocalyptic icon. Enough is enough I say. There are plenty of American places that are far more deserving than New York City. And as a New Yorker let me list them.

Texas

There, that should do it.

Ok, well more than Texas. Los Angeles has it coming too.

I look forward to the day when there is a movie that has a bunch of hillbillies trying to get into Manhattan after some disaster and we turn them away.

Gravatar I just found one, an 80s Audi Ad about its AWD system.

At the bottom of the page

Gravatar The coolest use of the Statue of Liberty was from a Hong Kong Movie, "A Man Called Hero." 30 minute sword fight that cuts up the big lady.

Gravatar Here's the video from Red Alert 2 of the statue being destroyed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f...h? v=fnd0qg4I_MM

Gravatar In Twisted Metal 2, a car-shooter video game for the original playstation, there is a level where you can shoot and destroy the statue of liberty. Can't locate a picture of it.

Gravatar Woops. I posted the comment above. looks like you already have that in the list. My bad.

Gravatar Excellent collection. Some of these I've never heard of, but I find the use of the Statue of Liberty very effective in disaster movies.

Gravatar Ugly Kid Joe - America's Least Wanted

Gravatar The Statue of Liberty collapses under a giant wave in the French sci-fi comic book series Valerian: The City f the Moving Waters (1970). Check my homepage/blog for pictures, if you’re interested.

Gravatar a take of my own:

Gravatar How about the 80's punk classic album by DK(Dead Kennedy's) "Bedtime for Democracy". Oddly the torch is in the wrong hand. http://www.cduniverse.com/ search...r+Democracy.htm

Gravatar I noticed they use it in cloverfield..

Gravatar Fascinating collection. I'm curious about the 1985 book cover illustrated by Thomas Kidd. Looks like something is happening to one of the WTC towers. Perhaps you know some of the back story?

Gravatar Cube -- it looks like that to me too. Unfortunately I have only the book cover, which was sent to me in email. But it definitely looks like they're building a dome over NY and that the WTC is under attack.

Gravatar Another one here

Alex Schomburg was Da Man!

Gravatar ecco i liberatori

Gravatar I guess I'm blind, but I do not see the Statue of Liberty in the screen shot from The Fifth Element. Can someone point it out?

Gravatar I left a comment on Thomas Kidd's blog asking about it. If he replies, I'll let you know.

Gravatar when I attended film school (NYU) in 1984 I saw an early Scorcese student flick featuring Danny DeVito as a lunatic trying to blow up the Statue of Liberty ... Its a long time and I have no ides what has become of it or if the footage is still available

Gravatar Joan -- I think the vertical structure in the center of the screencap is the Statue of Liberty. At least, that's what I was told by the person who provided it...

Gravatar There's that seen in Madagascar where they do a Planet of the Apes reference.

Gravatar Hi,

Here's an image of the Statue of Liberty next to the Statue of Judgment from Judge Dredd in the comic 2000AD. http://thumbsnap.com/v/eoVjueP0.jpg

I'll extract a screen shot from the Judge Dredd movie and send it through too.

Slade.

Gravatar In Twisted Metal I for Playstation in the NEW YORK level if you fire a missile at the Statue of Liberty she turns into a bikini-clad bombshell, if you fire again she (and most of the city) blows up.

Gravatar http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=CM...h? v=CMMYfvgq9m8

Gravatar using the Sinestro Corps and the Countdown teaser is kind of cheating being that the Countdown poster is alluring to the Sinestro Corps stuff.

Gravatar The 80's power pop band Candy show a fallen Statue of Liberty (on Hollywood Boulevard!) in their cool music video for "Whatever Happened To Fun?" You can see it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7...h? v=7rnGbYOJn_I at 02:28.

Gravatar I'm pleased you used the Judge Dredd images.

Just a quick note my name is "Slade" NOT "Spade"

Slade.

Gravatar Hey, sorry! I fixed the post.

Gravatar Don't forget the old America First poster that had Liberty's arm shot off with the caption, "War's First Casualty!" Here's a link:

Gravatar in X men the final part takes place there

Gravatar http://lost.wetpaint.com/page/Th...d+Statue? t=anon

http://image.wetpaint.com/wiki/l...15766/ GW413H220

In the last episode of the TV show LOST: Season Two ("Live Together, Die Alone"), the crew aboard Desmond's sailboat -- Sayid, Jin and Sun -- sail around the island toward the Others camp. On the way they pass the ominous and mysterious four-toed statue on the beach. Sayid comments that he's not sure which is more disturbing - - that the rest of the statue is missing, or that it only has four toes.

Theories: The foot has a sandal on it, which gives a Roman or Greek feeling to it, which means it presumably predates any current life on the island. Perhaps it signifies a previous civilization on the island which was eventually destroyed, which means it is part of the "Palimpsest" nature of the island multiple layers, with different parts of different layers visible at the same time.

The four toed statue may represent the ancient history on the island and it could be related to Adam and Eve or other people of ancient texts. We don't know who built it or why it only has four toes but we should find out before the series ends.

One theory is that it is the actual Statue of Liberty foot. From the angle Sayid saw the foot he would have only seen the first 4 toes. The pinky toe on the Statue of Liberty for some reason or another is recessed. However this can be disclaimed because the The Statue of Liberty feet are almost covered by her robe; while there is no remnant of a robe here. Of course , there could be an as yet undiscovered amount of time to have weathered away the robe, so that may be irrelevant.

Gravatar One of my favorite satue of iberty scene is on the movie "Remo William: The Adventure Beggins" where we can see a fight along the statue...

Really cool post, congratulations !!!

Gravatar I don't have screenshots available, but Futurama the TV show had the Statue of Liberty damaged on several shows:

Gravatar Level 4 in Ninja Gaiden II takes place on the statue of liberty. It is also an apocalyptic scenario.
