I love this post. It just rings so true for me - although Lily can't speak yet she still seems to manage to communicate in just the same way.

Marvellous. I've had many a day like that. Sounds like you're doing a great job and he's getting oodles of attneiton. Take comfort in the fact that it's good for them to learn that they can't automatically have your attention whenever they want it, that they're not the centre of the universe (though, of course, they are the centre of yours). My mum reminds me of that and I quite like it.

thanks, folks. glad you can relate!
ariel, re oodles of attention - i hope so. but there are times when you can be 'there' but 'not there', and sometimes when he is being especially demanding, i do question whether the quality of my attention that day has been lacking, or why else isn't he satisfied? the need for attention can seem like a bottomless pit sometimes.
i ruminate over whether i couldn't have just played trains a bit longer and let the washing wait. but i sometimes feel i have to impose my authority, and enforce his routine for his sake. i have to be 'tough cop' sometimes or he won't take me seriously later down the line. and all that. but sometimes it makes me feel mean, anyway.
