They are different things, yes. Not sure why.
It's like when I thought I was going to be made redundant from a job I didn't like anyway. It still hurt.
Sorry they didn't give you the opportunity to turn them down...
Never mind. Chin up, etc. Remember, it's not a matter of life or death, but what is? What is?
anxious - But now I know for sure that I wouldn't have turned it down...
backroads - You always know the right thing to say! Who cares? Who cares?
When I get turned down for jobs I always feel a little twinge of rejection. "How could they possibly not want me?" 
Only for a few hours usually.
