It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye

It's easy for an outsider to say "You should report him" (sounds like you should)

But not so easy when faced with the reality...

Well, in one sense, once is too much. I'd like to think that the 'public dressing down' is very much a thing of the past. It certainly doesn't work in a motivational sense, at least not long term.

On the other hand, if the rest are onside, why not display all the tact, diplomacy and professionalism he seems to lack, and elect a small representitive body to take him to one side and politely explain why his wild mood swings are not acceptable.

If that doesn't work, chin him!

anx - v true - and there's also the 'why bother, when it's all going to be different by christmas anyway' factor

gary - already done that. (as have many others) doesn't seem to make any difference in the long term. if it was me he was having a go at i probably would've chinned him by now!
(would've had to climb on a chair first)

I would say that at the very least it's worth pulling him to one side and explaining how distressing his behaviour is, and what effect it has on others. People are often oblivious to the effect of their behaviour on others, and mortified when it's pointed out.

It was lovely to meet you on Sat. NonWorkingMonkey was right to tell me I should meet you and your lovely man!

If you've already spoken to him privately and it didn't work (at all) then you could try talking to his boss. At that point it could however get messy.
