It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye

I saw Calexico last Fri in L'pool, but only with a Hawk and a Hacksaw and no Beirut. It is always worth that extra (100) mile(s) to London.
Great gig though.

Gulag Orkestar is a great album! Some of us have been enjoying it since June ya know... you jenny-come-lately you!

Tragicomic-Post-LoFi-Gypsy?
What is the world coming to? And Beirut is a terrible name for a band; maybe Scunthorpe would have been better.
But I jest. I'll give them a listen nonewithstanding.

kissing - I think Calexico were better when we saw them in Manchester with Iron & Wine, but Beirut were certainly very lively.

Gordon - You should've told me about them sooner then!

Timbo - It *is* a terrible name and would've prevented me from listening to them, but I should know better, as I made that mistake with Death Cab For Cutie.

I wonder why it is that the media all jump on one band at the same time and hype them as the greatest new thing? Call me cynical, but wonder how much the hype has to do with the quality of the actual music?

Last couple of months I've been to two pretty full but not quite sold out gigs at Manchester Academy 1, Porcupine Tree and Opeth. Two great shows, but nobody other than their fans has heard of either band.

I notice in lists of forthcoming gigs that a lot of the media darling bands are playing the same venues. If PT and Opeth can fill Academy One through word-of mouth without any media hype whatsover, does this mean that they actually play objectively better music?

I think one of the main reasons the media all jump on one band is that noone wants to miss the boat. Very bandwagon chasing now it is.

Hello! You came and said hello on my blog, so here I am. Oh Superman? Oh yes! You've won me over already. (I heard a very hard dirty house mix of that very song in a club earlier this year and managed to track it down. Let me know if that's your sort of thing, or if you'd rather put superglue in your ears.)

Tim - Surely you can't be saying I'm being manipulated by the media?? Whatever will they try next, the sneaky tykes...(I *have* heard of Porcupine Tree, though to be truthful, not Opeth)

Del - hello again. I think anything is my sort of thing at this particular moment, I am in a bit of a wet cement mood, very impressionable.

God, didn't mean to come over all "cooler than thou" there!

Trouble with the media hype machine is that it chews bands up and spits them out ready for next week's hot new act.

I often think that they deliberately go for artists they know will fade away after a couple of records, in order to make room for whoever they want to hype next.
