It's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye

A tumble dryer is a lifesaver, there's not getting around that fact.

I think that parents of people of our generation still had a post-war make do and mend mentality. My mother's speciality was buying clothes that I would "grow into", which meant they wouldn't need replacing so often. So I'd be waddling around in a huge duffle coat with knee length sleeves and some kind of asbestos substitute lining. Painful memories.

We've no room for a tumble dryer (we used to have one in the bathroom, but I now know that this is Not Allowed) and M doesn't believe in them anyway. Or microwaves. So when the washing machine packed up we got a washer dryer. It's more of a pain to use than the washing line, so we only use it when absolutely necessary. And that feels right, especially as they EAT electricity. I use it most for 'finishing things off'.

Betty - You are right there! My mum's speciality was buying things 'for best' but there never being an occasion that was 'best' enough to warrant them. They never wore out.
Oh, and socks that had been so grown out of the heel was somewhere under the ball of the foot. No chance of them staying up and deadly uncomfortable - but as long as they didn't have undarnable holes in them they couldn't be thrown out.

jo, I much prefer clothes that have been dried outside. It's just that at this time of year it hardly ever happens and I think how nice it would be not to have wet washing draped around all week.

Tumble dryers only seem safe to use on clothes that are already too big.
