It makes no sense to blame the U.S. for global warming because we trade with China. China manufactures for other countries that were not even mentioned during this special. One idea very prevelant in the show was the desire for people in India and China to live like Americans; I find this notion very disturbing. Just because these people can now afford better lifestyles, doesn't mean they have to blindly follow American consumerism. The idea of the American dream is more often than not betrayed in the America of today. The population is getting less productive, placated by material innovations, the masses haven't paid enough attention to their health or the environment. America's brightest economists have said that America's best hope lies in reinventing it's economy (focused around fixing some of the very real problems we face such as our environment, health etc, without loosing jobs), and it's average people saving more and not relying on credit. The people in countries such as India and China would benefit more from using their new wealth to better their lives in practical and productive ways. I have nothing against going out and having a good time; I just don't find it appropriate in todays world to focus so much on personal material excess, instead of community. If that is a true reason why do our politician constantly blaming and accusing the neighboring countries specially Iran and Syria for not controlling their borders effectively in order to stop enemies (jihadis) entering Iraq. Shouldn’t we encourage them to let them through so we can achieve our goal? Using the same logic, if the neighboring countries stop jihadis from entering Iraq, the enemy would try to come here to fight us. In that case the enemy may apply for US Visa or try to sneak in through our borders. In either case if we are unable to control the visa process or our borders to prevent the enemy from coming in, how do we expect other countries could prevent jihadis from getting out of their borders?

2. According to major media and politicians, one of the main reasons for Iraq War was the fact that Sadam Hussein attacked his neighboring countries. However in no occasion the names of such neighboring countries have ever been mentioned! In fact the two countries, which Sadam attacked, were Iran and Kuwait. The only and only neighboring country that he used WMD in his attack was Iran. He attacked Iran with the help and support of most Western Countries and he attacked Kuwait after he received a green light from US. Obviously the way Iraq was under control after the Gulf War, Sadam was in no position to attack Kuwait again. That would leave only Iran vulnerable. The same country that our option of military action against it, has been on the table for quite while. The main question is did we attack Iraq to prevent another Sadam attack on Iran? It does not appear to be a reasonable conclusion.

3.Another excuse for attacking Iraq has been said to prevent fanatic Moslems from coming here and forcing us to change our way of life and making us to convert to Islam. Since it is a fact that in Islam Christianity is highly respected because it is an Ebrahimian religion and Jesus is regarded as a holly man or god’s prophet similar to Mohammed. Why Moslems should start imposing Islam on Christian before they impose it to more than a billion people in China and Far East Asia who would have priority in such mission since their religion is regarded as none-Ebrahimian and therefore “infidel”. In fact what is seen today mostly is that majority Moslem nations including Iran, maintain great and close relationship with countries that are supposed to be “infidel”.

4.Most Moslems believe that if they can convince any person from other religions to convert to Islam, they both would increase their chance to have a special place in Heaven. If fanatic Moslems truly hate us for our freedom or other reasons, why would any sane Moslem would go thru so much trouble to convert some one who he hates so to end up with the that person in Heaven for ever?

5.Another reason to attack Iraq has been said to promote freedom and democracy. If that is true, wouldn’t have been much easier and less costlier in terms of human life and money to start with our good allies such as Saudi Arabia who is one of the most oppressive regime in the entire world? After all 16 out of 19 highjackers were from Saudi Arabia. Perhaps that itself would have been a logical reason. How about Egypt another ally and oppressive regime?

6.If “they hate us for our freedom”, would it be ironic to minimize our freedom as time passes? Wouldn’t we make sure our enemies’ wish would be met by taking such actions?

7.Many of members of Senate and Congress who voted for the Iraq War including Hillary Clinton have said that they voted for Iraq War after they did extensive research. According to 60 Minutes most of the evidence could have been found without merit within minutes if one would have used the Internet (such as Google). Does any one know what sort of research Hilary performed that convinced her to make such an important decision? A decision that its outcome still affecting millions of lives for the worst.

Frankly, it is very much clear that most of our problems with Middle Eastern Countries is due to our inconsistent and unfair foreign policy. For example we support an extremely oppressive government like Saudi Arabia and at the same time we criticize and agitate countries like Iran. Although Iran maintains probably the most open society in the Middle East, not to mention the fact that unlike our so-called “Allies”, they have full parliament and presidential elections. Contrary to what has been repeatedly claimed in the media” we are hated for our freedom”. We are hated because although we enjoy our freedom, our government tries its best to stop them from obtaining and enjoying the same freedom in their countries. Most people living under oppressive regimes resent US because their oppressive governments have been able to remain in power mainly with direct and indirect US support. Religion does not play any roll in their resentment. Religion may play in method they choose to achieve their goals that is mainly to obtain similar freedom as we have and enjoy.
           john parker | 04.12.08 - 2:13 am | #

Great show. I am outraged that they would adopt music originated by our cultures to do this. If we're so bad then why do they try so hard to immulate what we are? Unfortunately, based on Obama's cabinet picks, I question how much our relations with Iran will actually improve. And will Iran, under IAEC supervision, agree to exchange plutonium-enriched spent uranium rods from it's newest atomic power plant for fresh enriched uranium rods from Russia (it's atomic energy supplier)? And would Russia agree?

As for Russia, rather than a policy of geopolitical encirclement that only serves to fuel their paranoia about the West, how come the U.S. stands in the way of NATO offering membership to Russia itself. Membership has to be contingent on certain free press and policy issues being addressed, as well as military cooperation (which Russia may not see as being in it's interest at this time) but has such an offer ever been made? And would the U.S. take steps to block such a move?

Finally, China has the ability to make changes the U.S. cannot do (until mass demonstrations overcome inertia and corrupt special interest money). They need to build many nuclear power plants, some to reduce dependency on coal usage, some to dedicate to the production of hydrogen. The latter would be used to migrate their modest existing consumer base of cars from fossil fuels to hydrogen (biodiesel requires crop acreage and drives up food commodities unnecessarily). Add solar, wind, and tidal energy sources, and the growing Chinese middle class can safely be upwardly mobile with a far lower impact on their environment than the U.S. or even Europe.

I wish I could bring these proposals directly to the governments involved, because each one of these scenarios creates an everybody wins situation.
           Randall J.
