It could easily have been the real thing.
A couple of years ago, I dropped a small Swiss Army knife in my computer bag, which is always carry-on luggage, and forgot it existed. In subsequent months, it boarded airplanes with me at a bunch of different airports, some several times, including among them SFO, Oakland, both Chicago airports, both DC airports, both N.Y. airports and Orlando's airport. A conscientious screener at Logan finally discovered it.
At a networking luncheon during a security conference I attended awhile back, part of the time was spent joking about the great airport security DHS and the TSA like to tell us we enjoy. One guy told us about an exercise he had been paid to organize at an airport to test their security, and how the pros he'd brought in had accomplished their goals, picked up after themselves and departed without the airport folks even knowing anything had occurred.
It's all about budgets, and how much funding the REMFs in a mega-bloated bureaucracy like DHS decide our lives are worth.

It's pretty sad to know this is where we are at, 6 years and counting, after 9-11. It's sad to know that this day could repeat itself if it weren't for the braveness of most Americans- whom I trust would take down terrorists tooth and nail. Or take down the plane to save thousands of others. I'm really disappointed with Congress and Bush for letting things slide to this point. We are truly back in the pre 9-11 world, in every sense.
