You have got to be kidding. Americans (and I would hazard to say people of all times and nations) cant be bothered to contemplate much easier things like, which sports teams to root for, what career to follow or what political affiliation to hold, for you to expect them to put any thought into such a complex issue like belief.

The moral and spiritual framework in which you live your life is quite possibly the most important decision most people can ever achieve and as you pointed out, it is often done with about the same level of input as a mac and cheeze selection. Dont belief me? Check out the people of the Westboro Baptist Church, for starters. Throw in some fundamentalist Mormons, 75% of the people born south of the Manson-Nixon line and a majority of the population of Earth, and you will have the beginnings of a list of people that didnt put much thought into their belief systems.

For you to expect otherwise is folly.
