Gravatar good hard questions. says much about your character that you would internalize what you see and apply it to how you will raise your future children. Plenty to think about after the wedding...

what is a dubon?

Gravatar Dubon: Large winter coat made popular by the Israeli army.

Some of the questions are the essence of Galut - sentimentally we don't want to say that it would be more morally correct to close down tiny Jewish communities where there is no feasibility of long term revival and no point, but logically we know that we have to because otherwise we are wasting money.

I come from a small Jewish community in England before making Aliyah, which should really close down, sell their ludicrously great inner city property and donate all the money to the poor, needy, old, etc whether inside or outside the Jewish community. Instead they are going to sell the building to developers but have the developers build them a new Shul underneath the new appartments, thus wasting the millions of pounds on a shul which will serve 50 ppl once a week, none of whom live within walking distance of the shul. Crazy!!!!!! Completely mental!!! With the money they are wasting, they could pay for every member of the shul to make aliyah and live out their days in a retirement village outside of Netanya. What is the point of Jewish life outside Israel?

Gravatar I'll be more than happy to discuss some of those quandaries - especially about the "charity business"- in greater detail once the confetti has settled. Meantime, focus on you: If not now, when?!

And don't hate yourself overly for some healthy OnlySimchas voyeurism- it happens to us all...

Gravatar You seem to be in the classic state: "If I can't do everything, why do anything?" "If I can't live a totally moral life, while have any morals at all?"

But you're smarter than that.

As for those rich old Jews who wanted to keep their shul... I had the same situation in reverse. The old people wanted to sell the shul to a church and donate the money to Jerusalem Boys town before they died. We younger Jews wanted to keep it going, knowing the endowment would keep us for at least 10 years in which time the neighborhood would revitalize because of skyrocketing real estate values.

But, the elders held he keys and now we are bereft a shul for shabbas. The closest is way to far and the prices are way to high. And with an 93 yr old mother-in-law not wanting to leave the neighborhood, Israel is not yet an option.

Gravatar But will you be posting to Onlysimchas?

The world is in constant flux - my old community is disappearing because we all moved to new pastures - mainly Baka and Talpiot apparently!!

Gilly
