Well, except the anti-war movement, the womens movement, the anti-racist movement, the anti-globalization movement, the environmental movement, the LGBT movement, and just about every other 'progressive' movement that can be conceived. The Democratic Partys function is to suck the life out of and demobilize, to the extent that it can given the forces involved in the situation, social movements. It's written in blood on the pages of US history.
I use my wife as a barometer of "well-meaning, pro-labor progressives" and she is disgusted by what has unfolded after all the bullshit about "hope". The question remains: could a political party affect change when politics itself is totally gutted of meaning? I would join for organizational purposes.
I realize a political party isn't going to solve all problems. But, as you mention, organizational purposes alone serve as reason enough to support a class independent political voice. And for what its worth, I often comment on and talk to other AFL-CIO members (online and in person) and they are much more receptive to a labor party than they are to what they perceive as abstract theories regarding power, politics, etc.
In terms of donations to Dems, the union movement is the most messed over.

Hey dude. True that. The leadership of the Labour party is bankrupt- "new Labour" is a failure. The workers, however, still largely turn to the labor party, as it is the party that they feel traditonally has represented them. Here we don't even have an mass organization to reach working people at. There are unions, but only a small number of workplaces are unionized.
