It's definitely not a Midwest thing. The Bay Area, among other places, is full of the same vapid, feckless "lifestyle anarchists". When they gather every year in the Nevada desert for Burning Man, I yearn for the resumption of nuclear testing.
That has to be one of the stupidest things I have seen posted on a blog in a long time.

Lifestylers do sometimes grow up and become social anarchists. But this division is as old as anarchism. There were always bohemian individualist anarchists, who no doubt frustrated the anarcho syndicalists and libertarian communists of their day. I think there are more lifestylers now because of the existence of a large professional "middle class". One wonders what will happen to these people when peak oil/economic decline/global warming/imperial overstretch really take hold.

I can respect, even if I disagree, with some of the more individualist anarchists, but the lifestyle folks are bizarre to me. I would rather work for a corporation than live in the woods on twigs and berries. Not that they shouldn't be able to be nomadic, but one would think it would be much more progressive to attempt to change society rather than run from it.

Eventually, they will age, look at their non-anarchic peers and their accumulation of material goods and become envious, see the futility of their efforts, drop back into society and begin to work for the "man" they worked so hard against in their youth. That is why there are very few gray haired anarchists.

Actually, if you go to France, Italy, Spain and Sweden there are a lot of gray-haired anarchists. We are starting to develop our own silver back anarchists here in Canada too. And I should add, that the majority of my old comrades from the 70's are still at it.
Social anarchism is alive and well and I like to consider myself part of that movement.

The hops crisis would have me crying in my beer, but that'd be a waste of precious beer!!!
I am trying to grow my own hops. So far they are about 1 inch high, but they should grow nicely along my fence. A friend of mine is growing barley, so maybe at some point we can make beer completely from scratch. I have been using Coopers kits for years now and find they make a fairly good brew, but it would be nice to try to make it the hard way.
Vaquero's been muttering about making his own beer for a while.
The problem is that we live in an apartment, a SMALL apartment. I don't think city regs and statutes allow you to make beer on your fire escape -- blocking egress and all that.
