Good article. Glad to see we have a convert in the midst, makes me think it's not a totally lost cause!

I think as far as I'm concerned I'm happy if outsiders are neutral (as long as they're not IRA sympathisers, basically!) and I think that's a view largely shared by those I know.

On a side note, I hadn't realised it was uncommon for catholics to be in the police in Scotland too (or is it just in the west?) What's the deal with that?

Gravatar Thanks. It's not a lost cause, it just looks like one sometimes! The saddest thing is the deep entrenchment in tradition on both sides that can lead to the most intelligent of people coming out with the most astonishing shite. Mind you, that's hardly limited to Northern Ireland...
At the time my Dad was in Strathclyde police it was certainly unusual to be a catholic, and I do think it's a west coast thing. I doubt Scottish forces publish figures on religious affiliation , though, so it would probably be difficult to tell. I know, though, that I never came across any other catholic plodlets.

Gravatar people that have never lived there and to that extent haven't got a fucking clue what they're talking about.

You shouldn't let that stop you. Many people I can think of have lived there their whole lives and haven't got a fucking clue what they're talking about.

(Not you, beano )

Gravatar Not all of us who support the cause of Irish reunification are Provo supporters.

SF/IRA are the greatest obstacle to Irish Unity but that doesn't mean we should give up on it.

I won't anyway.

Gravatar Hugh - that much seems obvious from some of the recent IRA statements; not to mention the DUP

YI - yeah, I know that, didn't mean to suggest that was the case. It's just that I used to have sympathy with the provos myself, and now I agree with you about SF/IRA. Still think you'd be better off as an independent state, though.
