I want to introduce you to my friends who live in the Canaries...they are beyond fabulous. Drove trucks overland to Bosnia in the early 90s on relief missions. Are always haring off to do good deeds in South America...they're the best. Here's part of their address...perhaps it's near you and perhaps it's on another island. If it's near you, I guarantee you will love them. They live in Macher on Lanzarote. Drop me an email if you want more info. Then I'll drop them a line.

I don't have Canary-based friends to offer you, but I do have some advice: don't start a book group! Just say no to that impulse! A friend and I started one with four other women, and it was a disaster: we spent far more time arguing about what to read next than arguing about the book we'd just read, and it quickly degenerated into a support group for parents of teenagers - tedious in the extreme for the one member (me) who wasn't a parent. I plucked up my courage and left after a year, and I think it folded soon after that. You might have a different experience - but I'd recommend starting a walking group instead, or a drinking group, or a swimming group; something that gives more scope for free-ranging discussions and less scope for argument. Unless, of course, you're an argumentphile.

Thanks Lil. Have emailed you. Thanks too Zinnia - I've taken note! (Though have heard better tales, from Beloved Daughter, about hers.) Argumentphile? No, not really. Though I get into them often enough, By mistake.
