I lived in California for 15 years, surrounded by Spanish speaking people. I should have learned much more than how to order a super large chicken burrito.

Idgie / Duch - I can do international sign language, sadly I nearly always back it up with juvenile English spoken with the host country accent eg 'Pee-pee'

When i first got married i moved to Germany and i didn't bother learning the langauge but we might be going back next year for two years.I regret not learning it but its a must this time round.

I was in Germany for 2 months and quickly found myself talking english with german sentence structure... "I am to the shops going" ... and eventually chucking in german words (appropriately natuerlich) as I learnt them!
I find that the whole point of learning a foreign language is to be able to tell when you're being insulted and to eavesdrop on people who think you don't understand them.
And to order food.

Well, I don’t know, you say that your German is not that great and yet judging from your comments box you seem to have got all the major elements of the language down just fine.
I agree with James. It's always nice to know when you're being insulted in another language.
