Since I doubt Obama actually expects Republicans to 'lay off' his wife, I read this as a dog whistle for his supporters to increase their focus on Cindy McCain and the circumstances surrounding McCain's first wife, etc, while at the same time distancing himself from such efforts. It looks like a pretty sly move to me.

I'd say we can expect to see media attacks on Cindy McCain and McCain's family history getting play every time Republicans raise questions about Michelle Obama.
