"Where to elect there is but one,
'Tis Hobson's choice — take that, or none."

This ridiculous kind of aphorism is like saying when faced with "your money or your life", you are fully free to choose either option.

No one says such ridiculous things except you, in defence of your delusions.

i'm merely pointing out that there are genuinely circumstances where people make bad decisions under duress and that strucutural/social forces can mitigate personal responsiblity under certain circumstances.

ie. "kill this person or i will kill you" - is that really a "choice"?

Unfortunately for you and many others who would like to delude themselves otherwise, that does not apply to the choices that are pertinent to them.

Like children being brought up in the faith?

Carla: You don't have to do this.
Chigurh: [smiles] People always say the same thing.
Carla: What do they say?
Chigurh: They say, "You don't have to do this."
Carla: You don't.
Chigurh: Okay.

[Chigurh flips a coin and covers it with his hand]

Chigurh: This is the best I can do. Call it.
Carla: I knowed you was crazy when I saw you sitting there. I knowed exactly what was in store for me.
Chigurh: Call it.
Carla: No. I ain't gonna call it.
Chigurh: Call it.
Carla: The coin don't have no say. It's just you.

"Well I got here the same way the coin did"

Chigurh: And you know what's going to happen now. You should admit your situation. There would be more dignity in it.
Carson Wells: You go to hell
Anton Chigurh: Let me ask you something. If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?
Carson Wells: Do you have any idea how goddamn crazy you are?
Anton Chigurh: You mean the nature of this conversation?
Carson Wells: I mean the nature of you.

There you have it.
