I've got one of these fellas and have only ever seen 1 other in the flesh (have come across two on ebay over the past couple of years).
It is a seriously nice sounding bass - if changing the lacquer doesn't have too great an impact on the tone I think you will be surprised at how well it plays and sounds. I use it as my main bass now because of it's tone and portability, my only comlaint is that because I play it so much, I've gotten used to the short scale and suffer when I pick up a full size or 5 string!!

I've one too, it was also bodged when i got it, rusty replacement pickups, handcut plastic around them, and bits actually missing from it, chunks out, so far i've replaced the pickups and secured the jack, it was a mess but it plays so sweet, i'm not changing it, just re-finishing it, what i want to know is how easy was it to unscrew the neck, i'm a bit wary of doing anything to the wood, especially as some of the knobs arent availaible anymore...
