Wordpress has a nice feature that will import your Blogger account into it, commencts and all (don't know if the Haloscan comments would follow). Using Wordpress to back up my site just in case disaster strikes.

I moved off blogger because I had problems with it too. To not risk loosing things on blogger like you did, I would save it as a draft after I'd uploaded each picture or typed each paragraph. A pain and time consuming, so I switched.

Suggestion: Use Ecto to do your blog posts. Harder to lose a long post that way...
