I find it funny that they need to be packing while in space. What is their rationale for carrying up there?

They're actually not "packing" per se, the guns are in the survival kits.

They have weapons in case they get blown off couse on the way back. They could land in Siberia, or in the NW Territories, or in some jungle. They might need to whack a caribou for dinner or fend off dangerous animals while they wait to be rescued.

If you check out a picture of this thing, it's clearly a survival-hunting weapon, not something you'd want to fight with.
