Sanford can't resign, since he's term-limited and has one legislative session left.

If he does, then it affects next June's gubernatorial primaries since all four candidates would probably quit and let the new incumbent Governor, André Bauer, if it happens, become the candidate.

Mr. Bauer would have the advantage of the incumbency to help him and a year as Governor should it happen.
