Epistles from the Apostles

Gravatar As long as China holds the purse strings, protest will not go beyond teasing or embarassing China.

Renegade, I have to agree. And for that reason I am a bit of a critic when it comes to these high-profile anti-Beijing campaigns about Darfur and the like. Still, I'll be attending a bit of a rally tomorrow when the Olympic torch comes through Canberra - there'll be speakers from the Tibetan community in Australia talking about human rights issues. I'll be painting up a couple of posters in Mandarin in solidarity with the Tibetans. Whether I think much will be achieved, well I doubt it. The expression of support is the main thing. What else is there to do?

In Budapest a couple of years back.

I agree that it's both easy and largely futile staging protests against regimes such as China, Zimbabwe, and several others.

Raising consciousness of the human rights abuses there can't do any harm, however, and if there was sufficient public will, there's the vague possibility that our government and business groups may choose to have different relations with China.

Gravatar Hai! *giggles* It's gone 4am. Well and truely. Or is that truly? No, it's truely. I think.

Ahhh I'm going back to sleep now.

Gravatar Wow, is that what time I went to bed last night (or this morning)?

Gravatar Yes, I thought you would. After all, you have a master in ;;;;.

Gravatar Budapest .. who would have thought.

Whilst the protests may not change China's actions right now over time they will do so by continually raising awareness and by applying pressure on other nations to take action.

One positive outcome has at least been that the Tibetans and Chinese are going to meet face to face for the first time in a while. Whilst I don't expect much to come of it (China I do not believe are going into this in good faith) I do think it is one small baby step in the right direction.
