I believe the US knew of the coup. I doubt if they wanted it to happen. One of the ruling class's lessons from 2002 in Venezuela, was Bush's immediate recognition of the coup, caused US to lose face all over Latin America.

I think Zalaya will be returned to power. The US doesn't like the forces that were unleashed, ie people in the streets. The Honduran oligarchy is obviously short sighted and arrogant.

'Disproved', eh? The facts that we know for certain are that a right wing coup has taken over in Honduras. We know that in the recent past, the US has had a close relationship with Honduras as regards trade, aid and military bases. It stands to reason that for a coup to be attempted, or for it to last, the US would have to give the rightists the go ahead. Officially, the US has condemned the coup, but let's look at their actions, rather than their words.
Finally, there's an argument that the coup may well be supported by elements within the US without having Presidential approval. The right hand may not know what the left hand is doing.

Kinky Swine, Honduras is dependent on the US for aid and trade, as I said above. The US is under no obligaiton to continue supporting the Honduras government if it doesn't want to.

The US has a long history of backing coups and dictatorships in the region. Based on history, and the Honduran's precarious economic situation, the coup would be unsustainable without US support.

Since when have we stopped looking to history for clues? A quick glance back in time will show that fragile, strategic countries that don't adhere to US wishes are soon involved in a coup or similar.

Why would Honduras be any different?
