Thanks; this is the best explanation I've found! I was on a commercial airliner yesterday, and the flaps failed to deploy for landing. The pilot let us know what was going on, and told us it would be fine--and he did a fantastic job. (It was still pretty scary though; as a passenger it's not fun finding out that something mechanical has gone wrong in-flight!)
