I read Steppenwolf during high school and really loved it. Though I rarely read books twice, maybe I should to see if I get the same feelings again. About the same time I read Steppenwolf, I read The Illustrated Man. An excellent combo.
Don't know the sculpture, but your island looks very similar to areas in a couple of the Galapogos Islands.

You should consider Wonder Boys and Seabiscut too. Thank you for mentioning Pressfield. I have to get to the library and pick up a few of these titles from your list, especially Bradbury.

Which book I'd be if I was to be emulsified by fire: Catcher In the Rye. Perhaps a little cliche but I love that book, love how it made anti-social behavior not only cool, but acceptable. And how much Holden cares about kids. And how it pretty much demonstrates how kids are fucked over on a regular basis by adults. Yeah, I'm an adult now, but you always say I'm 17 at heart. Can't argue there. Also, to second An American, I'd have to go with Steppenwolf by Hesse. A fucking great book. And continuing the anti-social theme. In movies, would have to go with both The English Patient and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, as well as Cool Hand Luke. The first two were based on books, but the movies took them to another fucking level.

Ever had a crush on a fictional character: Sheesh, this is a tough one. I guess I could say Clementine from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Alabama from True Romance. I know those aren't books but the movies they are in are written by Charlie Kauffman and Quentin Tarantine, arguably the best screenwriters of the past decade. And screenwriting has some of the riskiest, best stuff available now. If anybody's asking.

Last book I bought: Icons: An A-Z Guide to the People Who Shaped Our Time. It's a pretty interesting take on everybody from Janis Joplin to Idi Amin to Tom Wolfe to David Lynch. Interestingly, the book came out in '91 and many if not most of the people who were still alive when it was written are now dead. Also interesting to note who hadn't become an icon yet.

Now reading: Everything Is Illuminated by Jonathan Safron Foer. Yet another kid wunderkind who sucks for being so goddam good at what he does. Naturally I hate him.
Waiting For the Barbarians by J.M. Coetzee. He's a top 10 fave author of mine, certainly one of my favorites still living, after myself, of course. His abilities are just incredible. I use him for technical/stylistic inspiration. Also an anti-social.
Icons: Great bathroom reader.

5 books for a deserted island: This seems kinda repetitive, asking this. Definitely a dictionary. Also, the Bible, just in case the zealots are right. Ummm.....does a full set of Encyclopedias count as one?

alix: i too, believe 11:11 to be a sacred time.
an american: not galapagos, but thanks for playing. think colder. you may try again or receive your consolation prize at the door. ps. is annie your wife's friend?
eric: the bradbury i didn't mention since, like, four posts ago. oh, nooooooowwww i see how often you read my blog. here and i thought you were a true fan . *sniff*
jb: i find it interesting that you didn't pick any fiction for your island, neither did you have crushes on girls from actual BOOKS. but since i am kind of in the company of clementine and alabama (don't forget georgia ) i guess i can overlook it. especially since you're the catcher in the rye. you rock.

Hey there. Sorry I haven't had a chance to post my responses yet, I haven't blogged for a couple of days. I'm about to head off to work, but I'll have something up tonight (possibly late tonight).

Yeah, the incredibly sweet (in case she's reading, but it is true) "Annie" is our fair-haired one. She used the character pseudonym in case one of her well-intentioned friends talks too much.

OK, for Fahrenheit 451 (a great movie that still scares me, though I thought we'd only have to remember one book) it would be
The English Patient and Running in the Family (Michael Ondaatje) House of the Spirits (Isabel Allende), and for the kiddies (hey, it's where I am these days) the Owl and the Pussycat (Edward Lear) and numerous Sandra Boynton books like Moo, Baa, Lalala/Hey Wake Up/ Hippos Go Berserk.
Kids gotta enjoy the story hour as well.
As for crushes, I still have a crush on the English Patient, in both book and film.

"the catcher in the rye" always reminds me of "conspiracy theory" and how mel g's character always had to buy a copy of that book every time he saw it. my husband and his best friend are both like that but with a different book. they both own at least 8-10 copies of "where the red fern grows."
sometimes, it is a little creepy.
but then again, i have two copies of the complete works of shakespeare. who needs two copies?
