My first real duty assignment was aboard USS HORNET - an aircraft carrier. Boot camp, 2nd Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Pendleton (LOTS of hills to climb, and we did, often)and Sea School (school for Marines assigned to Marine Detachments on aircraft carriers and cruisers (circa 1958 no battleships were in commission at that time).
I recall how the senior Navy Officers almost held Marines in reverence. I suspected then, and now, that since they had personally seen Marines in action during WW II, albeit from afar, they were more than impressed.
That, and we were super squared away and all. If you wanted anything done really, really well, just assign it to the Marines.
