Magnificent hippie-bashing. I'd like to nominate you to be the dignified patriarch of our cabal, since the Underground Dude has already staked his claim to fearless leader.
I'd also like to print out 95 copies of this post and nail them to the doors of the town hall here in the People's Republic of Boulder. Word hasn't got out yet that it's 2008.
Regarding delusional mass movements, I suppose that many similar things could be said of the (un)dead punk movement, which I used to feel an affiliation with. Just supplant the free love with molotov cocktails and the implosion completes itself just as nicely.

Thank you. I based a lot of the points on a paper I wrote for a History of American Popular Culture class, but added/edited as per my editorial biases. Punk is definitely a parallel example to the sixties: an interesting enough aesthetic movement with absolutely no wider social or political wisdom despite its pretensions.

P.S. I realize "Love is not Enough" is a Nine Inch Nails song but Reznor stole "Into the Void" from Sabbath, so he has no right to criticize.

Brilliant. I'm glad that brief revival of "hippy" culture I endured in high school ended quickly.
If you people get titles, I claim Love Guru.

Indeed, he doesn't. I think that's more due to the fact that he's a whiny loser, though, and not just because he's a plagarist.

Just to repeat what I said in private: great post. I even like the Beatles, but Lennon kind of deserved getting shot because of his later output. Still, all this game of opposite values, peace and love, war and hate, it's fascinating. He who fights with monsters, etc. But overall, that's a fine piece of critic of subculture.

Love Guru? Hasn't Mike Myers already laid claim to that one?
I think "intoxicologist" would look cooler on your business card, if you have one.

Intoxicology's a cool word. I stole it from this book: http://www.amazon.com/Out-Cultur...05895117&sr=8-
