I certainly understand there are different viewpoints on this.
While I'm opposed to drilling in ANWR, or for that matter any wildlife refuge, I'm not of the SUV driving variety that you describe. I've been looking at the numbers, and the real problem is our waste of petroleum.
There are a variety of reports, most notably by the USGS and EIA that support this view. Have you looked at these reports?
What I'm saying is that arguments against drilling are not as trite as you make them out.

alt hippo,
While I agree with you that it is not a simple problem and will not be a simple solution, we must take steps, however small toward an energy policy in the US. Conservation and research toward alternative energy sources should be part of that process. Until we can take steps toward each other on the opposite ends of the spectrum and work together, that will never happen. Until we can find and utilize those conservation and aternative sources, we are stuck with the dependence on oil and foreign oil in particular. My rant may have seemed trite but I find the opposing arguments trite as well as shrill. There must be a middle ground with a non-political solution that we can live with. I do appreciate your thought and opinion. It is not that far from mine...Tom
