You're absolutely right, but a conservative tact (or actual mindset) that will never die is that absolutely everything confirms what they've been saying all along. Sometimes it's spin, but I think many of them actually believe it. A decrease in violence in Iraq means "the Surge" is working. An increase in violence means that the evildoers are getting desperate and "the Surge" is working. There's no circumstances under which they'll admit they're wrong. Life is so much easier when you're not part of the reality-based community.
