I once was doing some public-service type work for a woman's shelter in Tallahassee. We were raking, mowing, just trying to help out as summer had set in and that kind of work was so darn hot.
A prominent, successful lawyer, who happened to be a member of my church and also happened to be white, approached me and said, "You know, Andy, I've been watching you - and you do really great work. You keep at it, you're thorough.. you've got to be the hardest working white guy I've ever met."
Maybe it's lingering naïveté, but I still don't get that one.
This right here is why I still love to read you, even though most of the time I can't read you at all.
Intent counts, and though I'm sure they scratched their heads at your comment, I'm betting the staff didn't get too freaked. Also, it's J-ville, so I'm betting they've gotten a few comments along the lines of "So what are you anyway?" from time to time.
Sittin in line at the stop light, the man in the car next to me is Mexican, he's blaring some mexican folk crap(Yes I can say it's crap cause I've heard the good shit). So I smile and crank up the nearest country station, It's George Straight's "I cross my heart' and I turn it up loud enough to drown out the mexican crap singing about being in love and neverending nights.. and then it hits me... we were listening to the same song... Different singer, and slightly different words... I just wasn't up for the accent.
We are all prejudice, racist, and hypocrites... just dont let those titles be the ONLY thing you are.
