I don't think they have the capabilities to deliver an intercontinental nuclear weapon. I think this is a bluff.

Thank you Lil Kim, we hearby renounce the UN Armistice of 1953. Please vacate Pyongyang for a cave forthwith.
Yes, what will the apologists say now? Oh right, Lil Kim is feeling insecure after the whole world, even Iran, has denounced their 'nuclear' test so he has to rant.
Wake up you fools! North Korea is threatening nuclear war against American cities with millions of lives at stake. This is an act of war.

Bombs away Mike. I beleive the time has come to protect our allies in the region, and China needs to join the bandwagon on this issue.
On the flip side: I highly doubt along with atheling2 that they have the technology for intercontinental nuclear weapons, but they probably have the capability to hit Japan, China, or Russia.
They will probably not hit South Korea due to the desire to assimilate.

Gayle: I think Neal, in the comment above yours, proved your point.
We've had quite a few reports, posted here, on the progress we are making in missile defense.
Too bad our Democrat friends have been blocking that development for the last 20 years.
We might have had the technology perfected by now.
Michael C and Atheling: It won't be much longer before the North Koreans increase their range and accuracy.
I'm not all that concerned that they would launch a strike at the U.S. They know North Korea would be turned into a cinder shortly thereafter (unless Democrats are in charge, then we TALK).
The problem is that they sell any of this technology to Iran, which observed their July 4 missile test.
In any case, we need to work harder on missile defense.

I think that is a lot of talk, I can assure you they do not have many of those capabilities. However, the final part of your quote that this will embolden others against the US is very true. Back after Pearl Harbor came the famous “awoken the sleeping giant.” 9/11 did that. And you know what, if too many people keep doing it we are going to get fed up. Too many people push our buttons and they might as well push “the button” themselves.
I am an advocate of maintaining our nuclear weapons. When the President stepped out of the most ridiculous ABM treaty he did a GREAT service to our nation. People claim it was horrible and started a new arms race. NO, after 9/11 there was a new world and he realized how insane the ABM treaty was so nuts as to actually say you could only attempt to protect TWO locations in your country. The Capital and an ICBM launch area. (Nixon, you idiot.)
Do the math, that is signing a document saying that the US Government (whose main job is to protect the American people) is NOT allowed to protect 99% of the country. And since NYC, LA, all those places are not near the capital or a silo in a mid-west wheat field… that document basically said we cannot protect basically 100% of our major population centers.
The President has focused on a number of systems that combined form our missile defense system. I know there will be people that say “the NK missiles can’t reach us.” Possibly not now, but it is a little late to be building a defense system that takes years to refine once they DO have a nuclear tipped ICBM aimed at our west coast.

MD: Well said!
I would just add that advancing our technology with missile defense with all possible speed would do much to deter North Korean and other nations like Iran from continuing development of offensive missile capabilities.
Of course missile defense does not address the threat of developing nukes that might be sold to other countries or parties who could then smuggle them into US cities.

That's rich.
SDI is political pork folks on both sides of the aisle have tossed billions at over the past twenty years.
And you know it.
Problems with SDI have nothing to do with Democrats 'blocking that development' and everything to do with unreal expectations generated by the folks who started this thing in the first place.

Or is this another case of where Democrats were against it before they were for it, or the other way round? Hard to keep up with the flip flops.
If the lamestream media was fulfilling it's democratic responsibility to inform voters, they would ask every Democrat in the House of Representatives who would exercise control over national security and funding the following question: "Will you vote to fund and deploy missile defenses at the earliest possible moment?"

SDI is one of those bottomless black holes into which we throw endless amounts of money.
After twenty years and tens of billions of dollars there still is no product.
It isn't the fault of SOME Demos who have voted against SOME SID appropriations.
Rather it is the result of persuing an impossible technical exercise which the military lobby insists on throwing money at.

Arthur(Stones in my head),
A massive amount of money has been spent on BMDS. Rightfully so! Nothing has been achieved? You're kidding right? It takes a lot of time to develop systems like that. I am sure that missiles were developed and functioned overnight. Wait it took years upon years and massive resources as mankind developed missiles for weapons and space travel. So I would love for you to explain to me why you would expect it to be easy and cheap to develop a system that can find, track, and destroy such a marvel of technology in its own?
How about this Arthur, all the libs bitch amount not enough was done. Well for years those with foresight thought about missile defense, they should just quit. Until some time in the future we have to have a “9/11 Commission” to figure out why the United States of America allowed a nuclear armed ICBM to penetrate our air space and explode over LA. During the Cold War we had B-52’s loaded with nuclear bombs in the air 24/7 365 days a year flying over the US, Arctic Circle and oceans. We also had fighter jets airborne the entire time and/or on alert to intercept any incoming aircraft.
I don’t like to think about it, but maybe if our stance had not changed so dramatically in the 90’s to a country that was so anti-defense… those jets would have still been flying around on the morning of 9/11. And today Operation Noble Eagle has picked up to defend us.
“Operation Noble Eagle was launched immediately after Sept. 11, 2001, to protect the homeland. In less than five years, NORAD has flown more than 42,000 sorties and scrambled or diverted aircraft more than 2,100 times.”
“About 26 bases around the country have fighters armed and ready to scramble on 10 minutes notice. The number of air defense fighters on alert had dropped from 5,800 in 1958 to just 20 aircraft nationwide by early 2001. Since the 11 September attacks, the number increased to more than 100 fighers.”
Operation Noble Eagle includes regular overflights from bases around the country that monitor the skies and air crews that remain on alert, ready to launch jets in response to a threat, if needed. “We are ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”

Reposted with a little change.
Problems with the space program have nothing to do with Democrats 'blocking that development' and everything to do with unreal expectations generated by the folks who started this thing in the first place.
It is a good thing people like you aren't in charge of a lot of things, or nothing would ever be done. You obviously have no idea of how things are invented or created or developed. "Hmm, the F-14 has problems, well, let's just fly P-41s for the rest of time."
Your statement is so incredibly stupid it is sad that you claim to be intelligent. You should know by now anything is possible, but you are too much of a Debbie Downer to believe anything can be done. So, stoned and kneel, what do you propose? Sit and wait for the missile shots? You sound like defeatists. Oh, you are democrats. It seems your plan reflects the national security plan of the democrats--nothing! If it were up to your party we'd have given up all our defenses, trusting that terrorist states would follow suit. I wonder how many people think that would have happened. By the way, your esteemed john murtha is one who continually votes against such needed things, as do many top dems. And clinton's plan was to sell secret missile technology to our enemy. It's probably just a conincidence that they're now developing missiles. All you have to do is check. When a party is forced to try to win elections based on smears and lies, even you should realize you have nothing.

Rumsfeld had NOTHING to do with selling North Korea the technology to make "nukylar weapons."
It was YOUR pal, Bill Clinton who GAVE North Korea two light water reactors, according to the specifications demanded by North Korea.
And Clinton spent over FOUR BILLION of YOUR TAX DOLLARS in that failed attempt to bribe Kim Jong Il.

ABB was given 200 million dollars to provide the technology to build those reactors. And Rumsfeld was on the board when it happened.

No Mike - I said that Rumsfled sat on the board of ABB who in turn sold nuclear technology and parts to North Korea when he was there. It is a FACT Mike.
I am neither willfully ill-informed or trying to smear anyone. I'm simply stating a fact. There is no distortion in what I've stated. None at all. You seem to be the one who is ill-informend about Rumsfeld's life as a director of major companies in the private sector. He was also a director of Sears, Bechtel, Searle, The Tribune Company and sat on the board of the Rand Corporation as well. Just to name a few.
I have spun nothing or lied or mistated nothing. And as much as it so obviously pains you the fact remains that there is plenty of blame to spread around in terms of North Korea having nuclear technology.
So once again I will ask you to show me where I lied when I said the Rumsfeld was a director of a company that sold North Korea nuclear technology.
And please - enough of the personal insults. You should be above that. I'm just looking of some facts that back up you claims that I'm a liar.

I realize your a legend in your own mind and you probably get a lot of attention from like minded lefties at your pot parties and coffee houses.
But you're comments stand, as I described them in the beginning, as another transparent attempt to smear Donald Rumsfeld, totally ignoring the repeated responses where it was clearly pointed out that BILL CLINTON paid for the nuclear reactors that were "given" to North Korea with American tax dollars.
Have you ever heard of the 1994 "Agreed Framework" which Carter, the Peanut President, was instrumental in negotiating?
Perhaps you might want to look that up. Donald Rumsfeld had nothing to do with it.
And... WHO was it that awarded this contract to ABB?
Here's a clue: It wasn't North Korea.
Do you want me to wait while you scramble to educate yourself beyond your obviously flawed and transparent smear Rummy talking points or should I just come out with it????
