I don't quite get why Rangel finds it so necessary... he doesn't have a clear vision (as do many Democrats) of the world situation and the impending WWIII, so what's his agenda?

Left unsaid is that there are apparently many non-citizens in the US military. They do get US citizenship in two years instead of five. Some leftists are very opposed to this. However, if you are willing to serve the country why not.
National service is a wonderful idea.
Young people giving back to a system which has made their live the envy of the rest of the world.
Alternative to military service is a great idea as well for those not inclined to serving in the armed forces.
Plenty of work in hospitals, physical therapy centers, schools etc.
Would give those campus Republican an opportunity to serve as well. They don't seen aware that they can volunteer to save the US from islamofascism.
A draft would be the perfect reminder.

- It is always for some reason. They just use “we need the draft because __________________.” It is like madlibs. Because they know people in America will get ticked when told what to do. That is why the military is better by having people there that volunteered and actually want to serve. Go figure!? In an office who is more productive the person that chose and wants to be there OR the person that rants about being stuck in a dead-end job and feels forced to be there? In an office who really cares? Less productive and bitching. In the military that person that is pissed to be there ends up not doing his job and someone or multiple people are dead.
I am against the draft unless it is NEEDED URGENTLY. They talk about bringing back the draft, Selective Service is still in existence! If they push this too hard they will piss off the American public, the military, and what would happen if they started the draft and all of a sudden the children of those against the war already are being sent over to fight. Can you imagine the internal turmoil that could cause in the party. If lives were not put in danger I would beg for it.
However, unlike Rangel and people thinking like him I would rather not use young people’s lives to make a political point. Why doesn’t he just stick to calling VPOTUS a “son of a bitch”?
Rangel is using the draft as just one more way to play the race card for which he so readily does. He tried this before during a Republican Congress and it never got any footing. Now that he's in the majority he thinks it will and he is most likely right. If it gets through the House, it will never pass the Senate and Bush if both fail will absolutly veto it. So its basically dead in the water Rangel got and will get the racsist headlines that he wants.

The whole purpose is to piss off the American people, they do not understand why people join the military. They have no constituancy with them if they can force people into service than they will always have a segment of the military that doesn't want to be there and that they can use for their agenda. Right now the demographics of the military don't match what they preach. If they can pass the draft even though they pass it the blame will still be put on the right.

Mike, I believe Rangel is trying to give a complete rebirth of the Vietnam anti-war movement. Remember, a lot of the protest over Vietnam was fueled by the draft and the threat of conscripted service in the war. There are no massive college anti-war demonstrations because there is no conscription threatening them. Bring back the draft and most likely you will bring back those massive anti-war demonstrations with it. Rangel may be making light of his reasoning, but I believe his plan is extremely sinister and subversive.
By throwing the issue back out, the Democrats are sounding the waters. So far the populace resonance is negative – that the Demos would be inflicting a wound upon themselves; so they will probably just let it die. Pelosi has already come on record and said that there is no legislation slated for early next year that includes reinstating the draft.

Rangel said that a draft would cause national leaders to think twice before committing our troops to combat. The implication being volunteer soldiers increasse the probability of combat use.
Rangel forgets that the Civil War, WWI & II, Korea (Rangel's own war;Purple Heart, Bronze Star), and VietNam were all fought with conscripts.
The volunteer military is much smaller than a conscript army. Thus, the individual personel are far more valuable because of the education, training, and high tech equipment needed to compensate for the lack of warm bodies. It would only be logical that an all volunteer force of highly trained and limited personel would be used far more judiciously than a conscript force of easily replaced, low skilled cannon fodder.
Rangel tried reintroducing the draft in '03 & early '06. Both plans went in the dust bin. But, they had the desired effect of insinuating the President and Republicans were re-instating the draft rather than Democrats.
His remark, "I don't see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft" is the same as asking 'do you still beat your wife?' Neither answer is acceptable and the question should not be addressed as serious. Rangel only intends to ensnare a hapless government or Republican party official.

A few moments ago I received a breaking news story from ABC News. While at the ABC site I answered a poll asking if the draft should be re-instated. 64% NO; 36% YES. And these results are in a liberal bias environment.

1. "The largest threat this generation will ever face" is modern liberalism, with radical Islamic fascism being a close second. Trust me, schlongsuck, you do NOT want me taking steps to eradicate the threat of liberalism, else I'd be making pit stop numero uno to a crappy art gallery in Seattlestan.
2. It might be a tad bit elementary and predictable of me to ask, but what the heck: "Maybe we're not going there for the same reason YOU aren't: we're free to do something else while saluting those who, while also free to choose a profession, have chosen to defend our right to earn and learn and live and your right to do useless things like critique art?"
