When I was there the subject never came up. Everyone just assumed that all the students were libs, just like most of the faculty.

This floors me. I cannot believe they would have a terrorist come and speak. But actually is what makes it worse is the fact that, as you point out, when real patriots try to speak at these liberal bastions they are shouted down or assaulted. Why is it that the same students would be able to sit down quietly and listen to a “scholarly” lecture from a nut, but cannot manage to do it for Americans?

Regardless of any personal views about this guy, I understand that the university is attempting to make a stand on principle, that of free speech, which I hope we all support. What stuns me, and belies their hubris is that the speech will be closed to the media.
If indeed our media is about free speech, as they all claim, how come they are not making a big deal about this?
Also, is Columbia afraid of something if the media can show or broadcast what the guy is saying?
Finally, although I am on the liberal side of things, I tend to lean towards an understanding that you can come to our country and do whatever you want... as long as we can do the same in your country. So folks like Mahmoud and Chavez are indeed free to come here and be critical of our policies and even our President. If we can go to their countries and safely do the same. We should seriously look at being likeminded towards our visitors.
